Motor Insurance
So what about Motor Insurance? Surely that's not going to be a problem.
Well anyone who has been posted to Germany will know that's not true.
To provide cover for Service personnel (and associated civilians entitled to BFG facilities) a UK insurer must be duly approved by the BFG licensing office and have made all the appropriate arrangements to cover motorists living on the Continent. For most insurance companies it is simply not viable for them to meet the demands placed upon them.
Two companies that do provide cover to SIIAP Members: Norwich Union and Groupama have specialist units dealing with their Service customers and as a result can offer the standard of service expected from a UK Comprehensive policy (such as Courtesy cars following an accident and English speaking incident managers on call 24 hours per day). This has proved very popular with Service personnel who otherwise have to arrange cover through the German insurance system.
The German insurance system is different to the UK in many ways and generally speaking the cover is inferior to the standard UK policy and carries higher excesses (your contribution in the event of a claim). The fact that claimants are expected to deal directly with the guilty Third Party's insurers (rather than your own insurer) doesn't unduly worry your average German motorist but has phased many a Brit who is unaware of the procedures to adopt and perhaps struggles with the German language.
However, even at home in the UK problems can occur. From insurers who react unsympathetically if a Serviceman needs to suspend cover if called away on Deployment or Exercise to those companies who exclude cover on military bases or impose other restrictions such as Airside or Quayside Exclusion clauses that can mean that many Servicemen are not covered just to get to and from work.
Excluding cover on a military base has to be the strangest exclusion ever with some insurance companies believing that your risk to them is greater than the benefits provided of your home/car being protected by armed guards, security fencing, CCTV and ID checks at every gate! This is why SIIAP Member Firms are more likely to secure a discount for you rather than face exclusions.
